Between 1999 and 2001 he served as director general of Sakhnin's cultural centre. He became a member of the Islamic Movement, eventually becoming the chairman of its local branch and a member of southern region's central council. In May 2010, he called for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic caliphate and stated, "I support the righteous party. The Iran-Hezbollah-Syria axis represents the line of resistance and intractability, and naturally, I support this axis."〔(MK Ganaim calls for Islamic caliphate in Israel )〕 Between 2003 and 2005 he served on Sakhnin's city council, and prior to the 2009 elections was placed fourth on the joint United Arab List-Ta'al list.
